Dolpo Trekking
Dolpo Region Trekking ...

Until recently, what little the outside world knew of Dolpa was an extract from artistic and spiritual accounts of visitors who came here early. Peter Matthiessen’s meditative book ‘The Snow Leopard’ and Eric Valli’s stunning movie ‘Himalaya (Caravan)’ only added more zing & spice to this unknown land. The region was only opened to foreigners in 1989, and receives only a very small portion of the visitors thronging other parts of Nepal. With more trekking agencies making a beeline into Inner Dolpo – allowing access beyond Phoksundo Lake to the 800-year-old Shey Gompa – a truly extraordinary natural and cultural experience is there for the brave & bold to experience (even in the monsoon!). enjoy stunning views of mighty Dhaulagiri at (8167m), once thought to be the highest mountain in the world…this is the land of the Dolpi {people of Dolpa}… this is your time to embark on your journey of a lifetime and return with a heart full of memories and smiles ...

The Dolpo Region is one of the most remote parts of Nepal & trekking in this area gives us fantastic opportunities to explore this virgin zone in more ways than one as we experience hiking across this region & witness all its uprightness and truly mystical settings. Added to this we come across one of the deepest Himalayan Lakes, the Shey Phoksundo Lake with striking turquoise blue water shimmering in the sunlight, as we watch the yak caravans that maintain the traditional salt trade with Tibet. Dolpa is located in the north-west part of Nepal’s Himalaya near the Tibetan border, where the greener, southern fringes of Dolpa, the largest district in Nepal, are distinctly Hindu. But venture north past the ring of high passes into arid Inner Dolpo, and we come across not only Tibetan Buddhists, but also practitioners of the ancient Bön religion, existing in just two villages. The spirituality of Dolpa is visible everywhere – legend goes to say Dolpa is a Beyul, one of the “hidden valleys” created by Guru Rinpoche as a refuge for those of exceptionally pure mind. Today, its northern most parts are settled by in by Rokpa farmers and Drokpa nomads from Tibet, who are cut off from the rest of Nepal by snow for most of the year. They live in some of the highest inhabited villages on Earth, nestling amongst mountains of harsh, ascetic beauty. The Chinese ‘cultural revolution’ of Tibet has had no affect on the Dolpi {people of Dolpa} who have maintained their culture & traditions just as it was centuries ago.

The Dolpo trekking region is located inside the Shey Phoksundo National park of mid-western Nepal, behind the north side of the Dhaulagiri massif. The region lies further north from the Dhaulagiri Range in the rain shadow of the Himalayas - reflected in the colorful desolate slopes of the mountains where the dramatic play of light and shadow in twilight is an everlasting immaculate spectacle that’s ever so beautiful.

In such barren terrain, the manifestation of Nepal’s deepest lake, Phoksundo, is almost beyond describing it in any form. Locals believe Phoksundo was formed when a spiteful demonness flooded a village in revenge for revealing her whereabouts to the saint Padmasambhava.

The strange sight of the lake, which hosts no aquatic life and appears to fluctuate between a turquoise and ultramarine hue – appears to corroborate the legend that remains in the minds of the local folks. If you follow in the footsteps of generations of nomads who inhabit Dolpa, look out for the remains of the ill-fated village below the lake’s surface.
