Makalu Trekking- Makalu Base Camp Trek- 23 Days

Makalu Trekking
Makalu Base Camp Trek »

Makalu, at (8481m /27818ft), is the world's fifth highest peak, & offers us adventure of a different kind in the eastern most part of Nepal’s Himalayan landscapes. Makalu is normally climbed from a base camp at Sherson at (4700m/15416ft), a charming high grazing area that clings to the tip of the Barun Glacier and is enveloped by gasping array of Himalayan peaks that leaves you stunned to the core…our revert hike takes us into some of the most isolated alpine territory that can be considered to be one of the finest in Nepal and cuts across a path that takes a short flight to the airstrip at Tumlingtar above the Arun River…this is a wonderful trek into delightful colorful villages as our trek takes us through pretty terraced farmland where the greenery stretches for miles…the views of Kangchenjunga, Kangshung {east} with Chamlang & Makalu’s towering south face give us that divine feeling of nature that can only be found in the raw wild…

The Makalu Region is under the jurisdiction & protection of the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Project, set up in 1992. The park covers altogether 2330 sq km. Mt. Makalu (8463m), this region is also home to some famous mountains that include Mt Chamlang at (7319m) and Mt. Baruntse at (7129m). and is a restricted area due to its unique beauty; however, we can trek in the Arun Valley and subsequently go further into dense forests, alpine meadows and up to the Barun glacier as we reach the Makalu base camp, from where we get super views of Mt. Makalu. The areas we trek in are considered to be low altitude trekking that is mostly based around the Arun Valley, the eastern part of Nepal. The valley holds within its possession the mighty Arun River and dense green forest, is contrasted with irrigated terraced slopes, where we see diverse tribal groups residing in peace & harmony and this environment we have the Makalu-Barun National Park, an important conservation area of many bird species, of which some are on the verge of becoming extinct.

The route we use on the trek is populated by a wide cross-section of Nepali peoples with a diverse cultural background. Close to the Terai, we come across the Rais, Limbus and Newars, whilst higher into the mountains, we meet up with the Bhotias, Tamangs and then, the Sherpas make up the hill tribes. These people live in scattered villages and rely mainly on subsistence farming for their livelihoods. Although culturally rich, they are economically very poor. Farming alone is unable to sustain most families and so there is a seasonal migration in search of additional work, which includes porterage for merchant traders and for the few treks and expeditions that come into this region. The park in the region has some of the richest pockets of plant and animal life in the Kingdom. It is our duty to respect this natural heritage and put in all of our efforts to limit our impact upon it. The Makalu base camp trek begins from a height of 400 meters (2,788ft) to reach a high point of 5500 meters (16,900ft) above sea level. Makalu trekking offers natural scenery and the main focal point of trekking in the Makalu is the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area, which is home to varieties of wildlife. Chamlang Himal and Barun Valley are the major jewels of this great region that makes it a unique paradise for trekking. Having a wide range of altitudinal and climatic variations, the Makalu trek offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of floras and faunas and rich in natural resources including its beautiful mountains, pristine forest and a wide variety of plants, animal life and the simple and warm hearted people local folks with their rich and varied traditions. The nearest airstrip in this region is Tumlingtar from where our trek takes off.

Makalu is still a mostly remote region and the trekking hereabouts has to be fully organized Camping style however, some teahouses are started to spring up on the route as the local folks seek to earn some revenue like their counterparts in the other popular trek regions of Nepal so, we’ll soon have comfort lodges down here & we may also be lucky to get our apple pies in this lovely region sometime soon…plan your Makalu outing with THE OUTFITTERS…NEPAL…we’ll introduce you to some of the loveliest spots in this great region…

Day 03.
Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and trek to maney Bhanjyang 5 Hours:
We take an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (510m) which is about 50 minutes and we start our trekking from the airport to Maney Bhanjyang. The trail ascends all the way through forest of rhododendrons and sal trees. En route, we pass a few villages. Maney Bhanjyang is a ridge inhabited by people. It is gently surrounded by lush green forest and is a grazing field for cattle and fodder used by the local people. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 04.
Trek from Maney Bhanjyang to Chichila (1840m)- 5 Hours:
After breakfast at Maney Bhanjyang we start our trekking, the trail ascends through forest of rhododendrons and sal trees for about three hours where we will ultimately walk over a flat trail that brings us to Chichila at 1,850m. This is also a point where we meet all of our porters. Overnight at Tented camp. B.L.D
Day 05.
Trek from Chichila to Num (1500m) - 6 Hours:
After b/fast it’s a relatively steady walk through chocolate box villages and lush green forests of the foothills. We finally come to a ridgeline with great views on either side and perched on the end is Num at 1,505m. We follow the ridge into forests passing through the Sherpa settlements of Baisake and Kuwapani then to Sakuranti Majuwa and Hururu; from here the route climbs 100m and then drops into deep oak forests and follows alongside a stream as we reach Mure. Below Mure the trail passes many tracts of burned trees. The route cuts across a ridge then makes a tedious descent on a rocky eroded trail to some steps and a final walk to Num. Almost every evening Num experiences a remarkable display of thunder and lightning, which makes life here a bit more interesting. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 06.
Trek from Num to Sedua (1540m) - Hours:
Our day begins at Num with nice views of our campsite at Seduwa, on the opposite side of the valley. This can only mean one thing; a steep descent down through the forest and terraced plots of land all the way to the Arun Khola (river). We then hike up a winding ascent up the other side. We generally experience more heat at these low altitudes, so the forest on the valley sides offers a bit of shade on this somewhat challenging day. This is the boundary of the Makalu National Park, so we must register our permits with the local rangers. By camping right at the top of the village we can enjoy a beautiful view looking back towards Num and the ridgelines surrounding the Arun Valley. Descending steeply from the western end of the Num ridge the trail reaches Lumbang, from where the path becomes exceptionally steep as it reaches the suspension bridge over the Arun Koshi at 620m, from where we make a rough climb to Sedua. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 07.
Trek from Sedua to Tashigaon (2070m) - 4 Hours:
From Sedua to reach Tashigaon we pass through Manigaon, where the trail turns west and makes a gradual climb above the Kasuwa Khola and reaches Chyaksadanda from there to Hindrungma Village and on to Ropesa. Finally, we climb 500m to reach the busier village of Tashigaon (2,065m). In the course of our hike, we pass a local school that was built by funding from the British Services Makalu expedition in 2008. The route crossing the meadows and several streams finally gets us to Tashigaon. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 08.
Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma (3560m) - 6 Hours:
It's an interesting walk today as we say bye to the lovely green forests that we don’t see for some time, these are replaced with the more remote scrub and rhododendrons that cover the lower reaches of the mountains. We first climb over the ridge & ascend through forests to a stream, then onto a ridge. We climb through two small streams, and then get connected to Kharka and further up to Unshisha, from where the trail joins the ridge that separates two drainages, a short distance from there will lead us to Khongma. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 09.
Trek from Khongma to Mumbuk (3550m)- 6 Hours:
Today, we climb on steep switchbacks for a while to the top of the ridge, at 3840m, from where astounding views of Chhamlang, Peak 6 and Peak 7 of 6739m and 6105m respectively can be seen. Following the ridge through rhododendron bushes we ascend a staircase and reach Ghungru La, one of the first passes among the three passes we cross to reach the Barun Khola. From here descending a small lake we climb up to Shipton La and then to Keke La at (4150m). The route then enters to a valley filled with rhododendrons, finally making a steep descent through a forest of firs to Mumbuk. This day is essential for our acclimatisation, as it gives us the opportunity to climb quite high, but then sleep low. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 10.
Trek from Mumbuk to Yangle Kharka (3600 m)- 5 Hours:
Today, we descend 300m down from Mumbuk to a rocky gully and then we continue our trail westward through fir forests at the bottom of the Barun Valley. We cross several streams, then cross the Barun on a wooden bridge to Yangle Kharka. Yangle Kharka is a pert little village situated in a meadow at the base of the valley. It's a relaxing place to haul up for the night at 3,610m. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 11.
Trek from Yangle Kharka to Yak Kharka (4810m.) – 6 Hours:

Tutse (Peak 6) 6739m, Peak 7 (6185m), Isuwa La (5340m) and many other unnamed mountains and peaks that lay spread out before us. Yak Kharka is a grazing field. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Mountain Sickness
High altitude sickness is known as an Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) as well and Generally it occurs when people ascend up to the high altitude mountains too quickly (after above 3000M). But, we want to make sure that none of our guest will get such sickness during trekking/climbing/Expedition, for the reason we should have all the preparation beforehand and travelers self have to be careful for it.

Most trekkers/climbers will feel some affect of altitude, such as shortness of breath and possibly light headache, which is fairly common. AMS is very different and if a person suffers from this sickness s he/she gets brutal headache and will be unconscious either. But, there are various symptoms beforehand and we have sufficient time to take precautions as well.

While you are in trekking and climbing, our well trained guides will brief you what sort of precautions you have to take to be prevented from such sickness, therefore, you don't have to worry for the matter, we also recommend you get some advice from your travel doctor or health advisor before you travel to Nepal.

The following information is useful to you about high altitude sickness and precaution steps.

Basically, There are three stages/steps of altitude sickness and their symptoms:-

1. The normal AMS and its symptoms: -

Guess! It may occur to you as well but do not worry as this is common to everyone.

Symptoms:- Running nose, Dizziness, Sleeplessness, Occasional loss of appetite and Periodic breathing.

2. The Mild AMS and symptoms:-

Mild headache, Nausea, Dizziness, Weakness, Sleeplessness, Dry Raspy cough, Tiredness, Loss of appetite, running nose, hard to breath.

What you have to if you get mild symptoms:-

  1. If you get mild symptoms, stop and relax (with your head out of sun) and drink some fluids frequently.
  2. Stop and have a rest more and take 125-250mg Diamox, it generally takes one to four hours to be cool down.
  3. Take 125-250mg Diamox in the evening and drink plenty of fluids.
  4. If you feel a bit better, don't leave taking precautions at the point; take another 250mg Diamox 6-8 hours later.
  5. If the symptoms continue to get worse, try to descend down, acclimatize and again ascend up.
3. The serious AMS and symptoms:-

Symtoms:- Persistent and severe headache, Persistent vomiting, An inability to walk in a straight line and making the sufferer look drunk, Losing consciousness, Mental confusion, Liquid sounds in the lungs, Difficulty breathing, Rapid breathing or feeling breathless at rest, Coughing clear fluid, pink phlegm or blood (a very bad sign), Marked blueness of face and lips, High resting heartbeat (over 130 beats per minute), Mild symptoms rapidly getting worse.

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE):- dangerous cases of AMS- If, the above mention symptoms get worse and s/he could not take any precautions, one can die within the period of 12 hours, but if one takes precautions immediately, it takes one or two days to get well.

Therefore, if one gets such symptoms, it is better one take treatment with medication, oxygen and descent down. Usually 4 to 8mg of dexamethasone is given as a first dose to those who suffer from such sickness and then 4mg Diamox is given an every six hours gap. Similarly, 2-4 liters/minute oxygen is given and one is taken to down.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE):- This is a serious case, if one gets the above mention symptoms worse, furthermore, if one accumulates of fluid in the lungs and mild fever, and then, there is chance of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). The treatment, one should given the oxygen at the rate of 4 liters a minute, using Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC). If there is no PAC bag or oxygen then one should take down to the low altitude, it is only the way of life saving. The HAPE can also lead to unconsciousness and death in short period of time.

Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)::
  1. Make sufficient time for acclimatization (After 3000 meters).
  2. Don't ascent up rapidly.
  3. Don't' use alcohol, sleeping pills and smoking.
  4. Drink more fluid 3-4 liters a day, clean boiled water / tea / coffee / soup / juice etc.
  5. Climb high and sleep low.
  6. Don't go trekking alone, take guide/porter.
  7. Follow the advice from your guide.
  8. Descent if mild symptoms are rapidly getting worse.
  9. Never leave to descent sick person alone.
  10. Avoid getting cold.

Please contact us if you need any further information about the sickness:
