It was certainly an experience I will never forget and I owe special thanks to members of the "Outfitter Nepal" team: NG, Arjun and Raj. Nar Phu Valley Trekking - 25 Days

Nar phu valley trekking was opened to the trekkers in 2003 and it takes us to the remote Nar phu valley inhabited by Nepalese Tibetans. Very few trekkers have visited in this interesting trekking region and Nar phu valley offers medieval Tibetan culture in peaceful form, dramatic mountain views and great alpine scenery in a Tibetan flavor. On the second part of this trekking we head to the Thorung La Pass (5416m). This wonderful trekking is for those real adventures in search of Shangri-La and traverse through challenging high passes Kangla Pass (5200m) and Thorung La Pass (5416m).

Nar Phu Valley TrekkingWe start our trekking from Beshisar following the popular Annapurna Circuit Trekking routes and branch off koto to follow the off the beaten trails to Nar Phu valley in the north of Manang. We gradually ascent and we have acclimatization then we traverse to Kangla pass, from Kangla pass at 5200m the magnificent panoramic view of the Annapurna Massif appears remote and unforgettable.

We explore the interesting Nar phu valley which has about 300 inhabitants who depends on farm, animals and till today yak herding is the basis of their occupation. After visiting this area we trek back to Manang, a beautiful and very interesting village of Annapurna trails and we continue trek to yak kharka and Thorung La Pass then we fly back to pokhara from Jomsom or we may continue trekking following the Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Nice and comfortable guest Houses are built in the Annapurna Trail however once we leave the route then we have to do the camping style trekking, so we have planed this trekking on camping style however if you are interested to do the tea house on available trail then let us know and contact us the detail:

Trip Client Reviews

A trek in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area cannot be undertaken without the assistance from the local people. There are a number of reputable companies outside of Nepal that will organise the trek for you where your team up with a group of up to 15 like-minded people. At the time my wife & children were aged just 8 and 11. English trekking agencies will not take children of that age on Himalayan treks despite them already being veterans of long Himalayan treks. I looked at a number of trekking agencies based in Kathmandu and eventually chose to go with Outfitter Nepal....

Climbing the zigzag path to the top of the hill, we will see the level, plain of Tal (1700m.). Beyond Tal, the valley narrows and the path becomes high and winding, and in several areas hewn from the rock itself. The route takes us through some beautiful woods and past several small caves, and pilgrims (Dharmasala). After we emerge out of a narrow canyon, the trail actually passes under a wide waterfall just before the Dharmasala, from where the woods become thinner and the vistas wider. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 09.
Trek from Dharmasala to Kayang- 6 Hours:
A steep climb up the valley along a small, scenic river brings us finally to high pastures on a 3,200m plateau. We pass by the scenic kharka of Meta, 3560m, a non permanent winter settlement of Nar, where we are likely to share the trail with a few yaks! This morning is one of the loveliest walks in the Himalayas. The landscape is combined with white rocks, low shrub and juniper, scattered evergreens, delicate brick-red and orange leafed bushes, crumbling shelves of flat slate, white and sandy trails. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 10.
Trek from Kayang to Phu village- 6 Hours:
Dropping steeply down to the river, we trek for a while along the river bank and past the “submarine” rock, passing some small possible campsites along the way. We start to see some of the unique, colorful chortens for which Nar and Phu are famous. We have to walk carefully across a small glacial stream before reaching a larger one with a bridge only half covered with large slabs of slate. Another hour and a half of trekking through scenic canyon lands and gorges, and the “leaning tower of Pisa” monolith guards the steep trail up to the Phu gate, called Pupigyal Kwe. This ancient gate provides us with the first view of the three villages of Phu, as well as an old “dzong” and the remains of the two forts, all now in ruins, but impressively situated atop the flatlands before Phu. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 11.
Excursion around Phu valley:
We will have interaction with locals and explore up the wide valley systems above us. We might walk up the valley to the summer grazing settlement or Kharka at Ngoru, a three hour’s walk past the gompa. Phu itself is an incredibly interesting village and we can observe the villagers spinning their yak and sheep wool and chat. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 12.
Trek from Phu valley to Junam- 4 Hours:
We get back through Phu gate, descend to the river and retrace our step back to Junam Kharka which is a lovely spot for camping. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 13.
Trek from Junam to Nar- 5 Nights:
Today we trek down the old bridge spanning a deep, contoured and narrow gorge and all the way back up again. The scenery is stunning. Below we sit Gyalbu Kumbu, built in 1650, and Satte Gompa , both empty. we finally reach the Nar gates at the top of the hill, and pass by yet another line of wonderfully painted, bamboo topped chortens and a large tiered chorten before turning the corner and being rewarded with sublime views of Nar, the undulating patterns of the surrounding barley and mustard fields, four old colorful and traditional Gompas and the snow peaks looming overhead. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 14.
Explore Nar village:
Nar is bit more social and lively than Phu and the village ‘square’ is full of chatting women with their back-strap looms weaving wool fabric for rugs and blankets, pounding mustard seeds for oil, or spinning the ubiquitous wool while catching up on the news. Each family in Nar seems to have at least one son or daughter in a gompa, and many live at home or visit frequently, so there is the resonating sound of cymbals, chanting and drums echoing throughout the village. Other Nar villagers may be printing prayer flags, doing some carpentry, collecting wood from the forest and carrying large loads with a head strap back up to the house, harvesting the crops, tending the yaks, sheep and goats or spinning the prayer wheels in the center of town. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 15.
Trek from Nar village to Ngwal after crossing Kang La passes- 6 Hours:
The Kang La is not a difficult pass, but it could be a long day if there is snow on the pass or the altitude is taking its toll. The Kang La, at 5240m, is an absolutely spectacular pass looking over Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho peak, the peaks surrounding Tilicho and the airport at Hongde. The trail down is steep and gradual down towards the end. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D
Day 16.
Trek from Ngwal to Manang-4 Hours:
Today, we walk through the leveled path along the bank of Marshyangdi River to reach Manang. On the way we pass pine forests, villages such as Braga and farming terraces. We will enjoy the views of Annapurna range, Tilicho Peak and beautiful landscapes. Overnight at Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 17.
Rest day at Manang for acclimatization:
Today, we hang around town. This is an important rest and acclimatization day before crossing the Thorung La. There are optional day walks such as crossing the river to see the tremendous icefall coming down from the Annapurnas, or climbing high above the village for a full panorama of the Annapurna range and the Manang Valley. There is also a Himalayan Rescue Association [HRA] aid post in the village which makes an interesting and educational visit. Moreover you can visit Ganagapurna Glacier Lake to make your rest day a memorable one. Overnight at Guesthouse. B.L.D
Note: the Tilicho Lake and peak goes from here.
Day 18.
Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka (4350m.)- 3 Hours:
Today the trail ascends gently all the way to Yak Kharka passing through the Gunsang (3960m.) village. En route, we will see panoramic views all the day. And it seems it is short trekking however we will feel tiring as we are going higher and into less oxygen air. Overnight at Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 19.
Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4420m.)- 3 Hours:
We start our trekking with climb gradually to a ridge before descending to the headwaters of the Marsyangdi and crossing via a covered wooden bridge. After a short ascent up the mountain path on the right bank, you follow a narrow trail across an unstable spree slope and then descend to Thorung Phedi. Overnight at Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 20.
Trek from Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3850m.) via Thorong La (5416m.) Pass- 8 Hours:
Today, we start our trekking quite early in the morning crossing the Thorung La (5416m.). The trail becomes steep immediately on leaving camp but as this trail has been used by local people for hundreds of years the path is well defined. The gradient then eases and after around 4 hours of steady climbing, we will reach the chorten and prayer flags of the pass. The views are dramatic to say the least, from the snow-covered mountains above, to the head of the Kali Gandaki valley below and the brown and purple hills of Mustang which are spread out before us. The descent to Muktinath is a knee pounding 1600m but it's compensated for with excellent views of Dhaulagiri. Eventually the moraines give way to grassy slopes before a pleasant walk along the Jhong Khola Valley to Muktinath and its shrines and temple. Overnight at Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 21.
Trek from Muktinath to Kagbeni (2895 m.)- 3 Hours:

Mountain Sickness
High altitude sickness is known as an Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) as well and Generally it occurs when people ascend up to the high altitude mountains too quickly (after above 3000M). But, we want to make sure that none of our guest will get such sickness during trekking/climbing/Expedition, for the reason we should have all the preparation beforehand and travelers self have to be careful for it.

Most trekkers/climbers will feel some affect of altitude, such as shortness of breath and possibly light headache, which is fairly common. AMS is very different and if a person suffers from this sickness s he/she gets brutal headache and will be unconscious either. But, there are various symptoms beforehand and we have sufficient time to take precautions as well.

While you are in trekking and climbing, our well trained guides will brief you what sort of precautions you have to take to be prevented from such sickness, therefore, you don't have to worry for the matter, we also recommend you get some advice from your travel doctor or health advisor before you travel to Nepal.

The following information is useful to you about high altitude sickness and precaution steps.

Basically, There are three stages/steps of altitude sickness and their symptoms:-

1. The normal AMS and its symptoms: -

Guess! It may occur to you as well but do not worry as this is common to everyone.

Symptoms:- Running nose, Dizziness, Sleeplessness, Occasional loss of appetite and Periodic breathing.

2. The Mild AMS and symptoms:-

Mild headache, Nausea, Dizziness, Weakness, Sleeplessness, Dry Raspy cough, Tiredness, Loss of appetite, running nose, hard to breath.

What you have to if you get mild symptoms:-

  1. If you get mild symptoms, stop and relax (with your head out of sun) and drink some fluids frequently.
  2. Stop and have a rest more and take 125-250mg Diamox, it generally takes one to four hours to be cool down.
  3. Take 125-250mg Diamox in the evening and drink plenty of fluids.
  4. If you feel a bit better, don't leave taking precautions at the point; take another 250mg Diamox 6-8 hours later.
  5. If the symptoms continue to get worse, try to descend down, acclimatize and again ascend up.
3. The serious AMS and symptoms:-

Symtoms:- Persistent and severe headache, Persistent vomiting, An inability to walk in a straight line and making the sufferer look drunk, Losing consciousness, Mental confusion, Liquid sounds in the lungs, Difficulty breathing, Rapid breathing or feeling breathless at rest, Coughing clear fluid, pink phlegm or blood (a very bad sign), Marked blueness of face and lips, High resting heartbeat (over 130 beats per minute), Mild symptoms rapidly getting worse.

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE):- dangerous cases of AMS- If, the above mention symptoms get worse and s/he could not take any precautions, one can die within the period of 12 hours, but if one takes precautions immediately, it takes one or two days to get well.

Therefore, if one gets such symptoms, it is better one take treatment with medication, oxygen and descent down. Usually 4 to 8mg of dexamethasone is given as a first dose to those who suffer from such sickness and then 4mg Diamox is given an every six hours gap. Similarly, 2-4 liters/minute oxygen is given and one is taken to down.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE):- This is a serious case, if one gets the above mention symptoms worse, furthermore, if one accumulates of fluid in the lungs and mild fever, and then, there is chance of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). The treatment, one should given the oxygen at the rate of 4 liters a minute, using Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC). If there is no PAC bag or oxygen then one should take down to the low altitude, it is only the way of life saving. The HAPE can also lead to unconsciousness and death in short period of time.

Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)::
  1. Make sufficient time for acclimatization (After 3000 meters).
  2. Don't ascent up rapidly.
  3. Don't' use alcohol, sleeping pills and smoking.
  4. Drink more fluid 3-4 liters a day, clean boiled water / tea / coffee / soup / juice etc.
  5. Climb high and sleep low.
  6. Don't go trekking alone, take guide/porter.
  7. Follow the advice from your guide.
  8. Descent if mild symptoms are rapidly getting worse.
  9. Never leave to descent sick person alone.
  10. Avoid getting cold.

Please contact us if you need any further information about the sickness:
