RAFTING: WILD AQUA VENTURES THAT TAKES THE ADRENALINE TO MACH 2…
Rafting on Nepal’s wild rivers is one of the most thrilling water wonders that can be experienced by anyone who has a desire for going wild on the waterline.
Rafting the wild rivers of Nepal is one ideal way of escaping the frills of everyday life. Nepal's rivers are second to none, originating from the glaciers of the world’s highest mountains; they plunge through towering gorges and forested foothills before the more tranquil journey along the Ganges plain on their way to the Bay of Bengal. Rivers in this part of the world are regarded as goddesses, and are included in a number of Hindu and Buddhist religious rituals. You may be lucky to witness a river festival during your trip. It’s a treat to remember.
Rafting in Nepal can be a splendid adventure that you would have probably never thought about. There are plenty of milky white water rapids to keep the adrenaline on top gear, with more tranquil stretches in between allowing time to reflect on the abundance of natural beauty that you witness on your rafting trips. Camping overnight on the banks of the river under starry skies on a moonlit night can be a very special romantic experience, especially if you are accompanied with your beloved fiancé. You are generally accommodated in tents for 2 people that are set up often around a campfire made from driftwood. All necessary equipment is provided and each rafting team is led by one of our highly experienced rafting guides’ who know the nature of the rivers better than they know themselves. Our rafters are team leaders who simply enjoy their jobs. Rafting experience is not necessary unless stated in the itinerary. This also depends on the river you choose for your rafting adventure.
1. Antecedent to the Himalayas 2. below the Mahabharat 3. Below the Churia range
The major river systems are: the Koshi, the Karnali and the Gandaki which belong to the first group as stated in No. 1. Rivers originating from the Mahabharat Range, and which cut through the Churia hills, come under the second group. These include the Karnali, Bagmati, and the river Kamala. The third group of rivers originates from the southern face of the Churia hills. We run rafting expeditions on the following river routes:
All the major rivers are created from the Himalayas and cascading down the mountains offers tremendous exciting experience of white Water rafting. Nepal’s river journeys are one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to experience the life of rural areas and spectacular scenery of natural beauty that we witness on our rafting trips. The options include paddling, oaring and kayaking. Paddling requires all on boat to participate with instructions from the river runner. In an oar boat, the guide rows alone, giving participants a chance to observe the surroundings. Kayaking is another way to travel downstream. You can take a combo package of river running itineraries along with trekking, a wildlife safari and/or a cultural tour in the area. ‘Outfitter Nepal’ guides share of themselves and their knowledge and they remember that this adventurous vacation is about you and your experience on the river. They’re always patient with the same question they’ve heard a thousand times, helpful to those who worry about the trip, and they comprehend your concerns while routinely catering to your comfort on the river and in camp. Our guides can become musicians, storytellers, jesters, professors, wonderful cooks, best companions, and of course, excellent river guides. They’ll go out of their way to play any role to make sure that you are happy & safe. They have a keen sense for each of their clients, and watch for the gap that needs filling, or the rainbow that needs an “Ah!” to keep your holiday on top gear.
As you assemble at your meeting place, you may notice travelers of all ages and athletic abilities represented among the group of rafters. Additionally, you will no doubt recognize kindred spirits in your fellow adventurers. ‘Outfitter Nepal’ specializes in small group travel with group sizes that range from 6 to 8 travelers to as many as 25 travelers on a full trip generally with 4 to 6 passengers in a raft.
Your guides, who are the single-most complimented element of our organization, will greet you and explain in detail what you may expect throughout your trip. They are pros at keeping you calm as you venture beyond your comfort zone: our goal is for you to have fun and memorable experiences. The trip leader will provide a detailed safety talk and distribute the appropriate gear required for your trip. ‘Outfitter Nepal’ boats, equipment and gear are top-of-the-line and meticulously maintained. Rest assured knowing that we use only the best and most reliable equipment.
You will choose your boat (often you’ll have the option of an oar raft, paddle raft, inflatable kayak and on many trips a dory or two may be available), companions and guide, tighten your lifejacket, fasten your helmet and allow the fun to begin. Your aquatic venture will soon be on a roll!! Whether you enjoy quiet moments of floating on a calm stretch of river or paddling through heart-pumping Class V whitewater, your vacation has arrived! You will experience new thrills, see new parts of Nepal’s wilderness and create memories to last a lifetime.
After a morning of river running as your adrenaline and jumpy nerves begin to fade, you will stop for lunch. No doubt the guides will find a sandy beach or otherwise appropriate place for a hearty meal. We prepare lunch as you compare the morning’s experience with friends, family and fellow travelers. Lunch may be a delicious spread of cold cuts and cheese on assorted breads, with hummus and veggies in soft pitas, or tasty salad in roll-your-own burritos {pasta bread}. There will also be a seemingly endless supply of cookies for dessert, or a fruit salad and a cool drink. Tea or coffee is always there to wrap it up.
The guides pack up and everyone returns to their rafts for another thrilling ride to camp. You may change boats and join new friends or hop in a raft with another guide. Each guide has his own unique personality and offer insights into the geology, history, flora and fauna of what we see by the river banks. In most cases, you are on the river for no more than +/- 6 hours a day—just ¼ of your day—which leaves a lot of time for hiking, exploring, fishing, reading, napping and relaxing on the beach. ‘Feel at home’ is the norm of the day!!
Our guides are experts at finding the best camp spots away from other groups. You may often feel as though you are the only people on the river. Camp may be at a still, sandy alcove on the water’s edge, or a sunny, green clearing among mammoth cedars and towering cliff faces. There are trailheads, fishing hideaways and swimming holes just a few moments away. For the first-time adventurers, a tent set up is a breeze. Your guides can show you how, or help you out. Sturdy tents, cozy sleeping bags and thick sleeping pads give your camp by the river most of the comforts of home, with the towering mountains to protect you from the elements.
The guides prepare the rest of the camp—including a private location for the “groover” (bathroom). The remainder of the afternoon and evening is yours to enjoy, whether you choose to play a game of horseshoes or bocce ball on the beach, join a guided interpretive hike, enjoy a good book or hang out with the guides as they prepare hors d’oeuvres and a hearty meal. Enjoy the pleasure of a cold beer or soft drink, chilled in the river after a hot day or savor a glass of wine that we can carry from Kathmandu. The choice is yours. This is life in the Himalaya!
The meals we serve are hearty and sumptuous, complete with fresh fruits and vegetables throughout your entire journey. Our menu features great camp cooking in a wilderness atmosphere. Wake up to pancakes, omelets, or eggs cooked to order, complemented by bacon or sausage, juice, and plenty of fresh-brewed coffee, tea and cocoa. Satiate your appetite at lunch with a delicious spread of cold cuts and cheese on assorted breads, hummus and veggies in soft pitas, or tasty taco salad wraps. At the dinner table, our guides’ cooking skills truly shine. You may snack on hors d’oeuvres while waiting for vegetables, pasta, rice, and the main course: steak, maybe grilled salmon, Baja tacos, sizzling fajitas, or perhaps delicious tandoori chicken. Vegetarian options are available if you tell us of your preference ahead of time. And, if you can find room, there will always be something for dessert, maybe apple pie or caramel custard. Expect to eat as well—or better—than you do at home, without having to do any of the work. You are on vacation, & the time is yours to enjoy!!
As some of the guides clean up the dinner mess at least one of the guides may break out a guitar or recap the day with a larger than life tale from the river. Evenings might include a star talk, a campfire, smokes, a reading from the journal of an early explorer, a joke telling competition or quiet time to mull over a brilliant, unhindered campfire under moonlit starry skies.
Read Kevin Fedarko’s “Groover Boy” article written for Outside Magazine…it tells you all about what life is in the wild…it’s thrilling to the bones…
