Upper Mustang Trekking...
Fixed Departure Trip
Upper Mustang Trekking - 18 Days
Trekking in Upper Mustang Region is very popular trekking in Nepal and it is one of the most mysterious trekking Regions in Nepal. The landscape of this region is a barren moonscape of eroded sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces, which together present a colorful mosaic made up principally of earthen reds, yellows and brown.
The trekking in the Mustang is relatively easy trekking along the permitted route to Lo Manthang, lies in the heart of Mustang. The trek to Mustang is through an almost treeless barren landscape, strong winds generally howl across the area in the afternoon and low at night. Mustang is considered to be the rain shadow areas of the Himalayas, the result, there is much less rain in comparison to whole country of Nepal. Mustang is one of the few places in the world that has long-lived a very close-niche life. The interesting is that the region was inaccessible to outsiders until some years back. This isolation Mustang owns a unique lifestyle and cultural heritage of people living in the area, which has remained almost unchanged for centuries. The majestic Himalayan ranges of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna are hidden behind this area. Mustang is filled with beautiful trekking zones. With this all the features, special trekking permit is required for all the trekkers from the government registered trekking company in Nepal and only the camping or tented treks are allowed into the region. Outfitter Nepal has long been organizing the trekking in the area, therefore, you do not need to worry, if you want to go and explore this unique area of the world.
Mustang trekking is one of the most mysterious and least known kingdoms in the world. Trekking in the area is mostly organized during the rainy season. This isolated kingdom of Mustang prospered in the 15th century, when its strategic location enabled to salt trade between Tibet and Nepal. The landscape of Mustang is dry, naturally carved sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces, these all present naturally a colorful variety made up of red, yellow and brown together. It is comparably considered to be one of the easy trekking in Nepal. The trekking to Mustang is through an almost treeless landscape and infertile landscape. You experience the strong wind blowing across the area as it is a rain shadow area of Nepal.
Normally, trekking in to upper Mustang is privileged to have an experience the life and lifestyle of people, who have been residing calmly, even in such harsh environment. The trekking in Upper Mustang is quite similar to trekking in Tibet; as geographically it is a part of Tibet. Interesting is that, this was a part of Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830's. The medieval wall city of Lo Monthang, unofficial capital of Mustang still remains a kingdom. It is rich in culture and religious heritage. The history of Lo Monthang is based on myth and legend rather than the recorded detail. Mustang maintained its status as a separate principality until 1951. The king of Lo Monthang still retains his title and he has been given the honorary rank of colonel in the Nepalese Army.
The trekking in Mustang begins with flight from Pokhara to Jomsom above upper Kali Gandaki River between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The trekking holiday to Mustang allows us to explore a weird and wonderful landscape of eroded conglomerate cliffs, colored by natural earth coloring -- red, yellow, brown and blue. Trekking across passes of up to 4100m, we also trek through a succession of picturesque white painted Mustang villages and Tibetan monasteries, set against a backdrop of the distant snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. We have a day to explore our ultimate destination for excursion in Lo Manthang, a fairy-tale walled city and the capital of Mustang. This enlightening trekking adventure to Mustang in Nepal entices to them who love to explore special part of the Himalaya and finally by flight from Jomsom, we return to Pokhara or continue trek to Ghorepani poon hill and ending Himalayan adventure trip until Pokhara.
Basically, trekking in the region has to be arranged in camping style however basic tea houses are started to built the this region so, we can do the basic tea house trekking as well.

Trip Client Reviews
A trek in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area cannot be undertaken without the assistance from the local people. There are a number of reputable companies outside of Nepal that will organise the trek for you where your team up with a group of up to 15 like-minded people. At the time my wife & children were aged just 8 and 11. English trekking agencies will not take children of that age on Himalayan treks despite them already being veterans of long Himalayan treks. I looked at a number of trekking agencies based in Kathmandu and eventually chose to go with Outfitter Nepal....

The trail is quite barren with craggy rocks and sand and is mostly flat, which makes it very easy going. It is also very picturesque, with views of big peaks all around such as Dhaulagiri, Tukuche and Nilgiri, whilst to the south can be seen the entire Annapurna Massif. The trail then widens significantly revealing an endless stretch of sand on the west bank of the river; we stop for lunch at the village of Tangbe, where we come across the first black, white and red chortens that typify Upper Mustang. The little town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys among white washed houses, fields of buck wheat and barley and apple orchards. Nilgiri Peak continues to dominate the southern skyline. Day 06.
Trek from Chuksang to Samar (3150m.)- 4 Hours:
There is a distinct change here, not only in the topography, but also in the culture, lifestyle and people, and the settlements become more scattered, smaller and more basic. The people of Lo or Mustang practice agriculture. Lack of rain and fertile soil, cultivation is carried out in sheltered plots of land, covering the brown landscape with patches of green vegetation. Continuing north, we reach a huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliffs above, forming a tunnel through which the river flows. The trek now leaves the valley and climbs steeply up a rocky alley to the village of Chele. From Chele we climb a steep spur and then continue ascending along the side of a spectacular steep canyon to a pass. Beyond the pass we descend on a pleasant trail to Samar. Overnight at Tented camp or Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 07.
Trek from Samar to Geling (3510 m.)5 Hours:
Today, we climb above Samar to a ridge and then descend into a large gorge past a chorten before entering another valley filled with juniper trees. We then cross a stream and after climbing to a pass, we descend along a ridge to Shyangmochen a tiny settlement with a few tea shops. Nearby is Rangbyung, a cave containing stalagmites which have formed in the shape of chortens. The trail climbs gently from Shyangmochen and we enter another huge valley before descending to Geling with its extensive fields of barley. Overnight at Tented camp or Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 08.
Trek from Geling to Ghami (3490 m.) via Ghami La (3520m.)- 5 Hours:
From Geling the trail climbs gently through fields, up to the center of the valley, passing above the settlement of Tama Gun and an imposing chorten. We then begin a taxing climb across the head of the valley to the Nyi La [3840m]. The descent from the pass is quite gentle and about half an hour further on we come to a trail junction; the right trail is the direct route to Charang, the left trail leads to Ghami. Ghami is a large white-washed village sheltered by overhanging cliffs. Overnight at Tented camp or Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 09.
Trek fram Ghami to Tsarang (3620 m.)- 5 Hours:
Today's walk is through perhaps the driest part of Mustang. However, the magnificent views of the countryside, from the gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountains in the east and west, are a source of inspiration. Finally, we come to Charang, a large spread-out village at the top of the Charang Chu canyon. At the eastern end of the village are a huge fortress and a red gompa which houses an excellent collection of statues and thangkas. Overnight at Tented camp or Guesthouse. B.L.D
Day 10.
Trek from Tsarang to Lo-Manthang [Mustang] (3730m.)- 3 Hours:
Today, we will spend part of the morning exploring the interesting village of Charang and its large monastery, before setting out for Lo Manthang. We climb gently above the valley to a large isolated chorten that marks the boundary between Charang and Lo. The trail then broadens and eventually we get our first view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. The city has only one entrance so you circumambulate the wall to the gate on the north east corner. Day 13.
Trek from Ghami to Samar- 6 Hours:
Leaving Ghami we begin to follow narrow winding path until we reach Geling crossing a small stream. On the way we can enjoy good view of the Nilgiri Mountains, deserted landscapes, Tibetan style villages, farming terraces and natural vegetation. From Geling the path turns broader till Samar passing deserted landscapes, natural vegetation, plateau, Tibetan style houses, chortens, mani walls, prayer flags and observe the distinct culture of the local inhabitants. High altitude sickness is known as an Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) as well and Generally it occurs when people ascend up to the high altitude mountains too quickly (after above 3000M). But, we want to make sure that none of our guest will get such sickness during trekking/climbing/Expedition, for the reason we should have all the preparation beforehand and travelers self have to be careful for it.
Most trekkers/climbers will feel some affect of altitude, such as shortness of breath and possibly light headache, which is fairly common. AMS is very different and if a person suffers from this sickness s he/she gets brutal headache and will be unconscious either. But, there are various symptoms beforehand and we have sufficient time to take precautions as well.
While you are in trekking and climbing, our well trained guides will brief you what sort of precautions you have to take to be prevented from such sickness, therefore, you don't have to worry for the matter, we also recommend you get some advice from your travel doctor or health advisor before you travel to Nepal.
The following information is useful to you about high altitude sickness and precaution steps.
Basically, There are three stages/steps of altitude sickness and their symptoms:-
1. The normal AMS and its symptoms: -
Guess! It may occur to you as well but do not worry as this is common to everyone.
Symptoms:- Running nose, Dizziness, Sleeplessness, Occasional loss of appetite and Periodic breathing.
2. The Mild AMS and symptoms:-
Mild headache, Nausea, Dizziness, Weakness, Sleeplessness, Dry Raspy cough, Tiredness, Loss of appetite, running nose, hard to breath.
What you have to if you get mild symptoms:-
- If you get mild symptoms, stop and relax (with your head out of sun) and drink some fluids frequently.
- Stop and have a rest more and take 125-250mg Diamox, it generally takes one to four hours to be cool down.
- Take 125-250mg Diamox in the evening and drink plenty of fluids.
- If you feel a bit better, don't leave taking precautions at the point; take another 250mg Diamox 6-8 hours later.
- If the symptoms continue to get worse, try to descend down, acclimatize and again ascend up.
3. The serious AMS and symptoms:-
Symtoms:- Persistent and severe headache, Persistent vomiting, An inability to walk in a straight line and making the sufferer look drunk, Losing consciousness, Mental confusion, Liquid sounds in the lungs, Difficulty breathing, Rapid breathing or feeling breathless at rest, Coughing clear fluid, pink phlegm or blood (a very bad sign), Marked blueness of face and lips, High resting heartbeat (over 130 beats per minute), Mild symptoms rapidly getting worse.
High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE):- dangerous cases of AMS- If, the above mention symptoms get worse and s/he could not take any precautions, one can die within the period of 12 hours, but if one takes precautions immediately, it takes one or two days to get well.
Therefore, if one gets such symptoms, it is better one take treatment with medication, oxygen and descent down. Usually 4 to 8mg of dexamethasone is given as a first dose to those who suffer from such sickness and then 4mg Diamox is given an every six hours gap. Similarly, 2-4 liters/minute oxygen is given and one is taken to down.
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE):- This is a serious case, if one gets the above mention symptoms worse, furthermore, if one accumulates of fluid in the lungs and mild fever, and then, there is chance of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). The treatment, one should given the oxygen at the rate of 4 liters a minute, using Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC). If there is no PAC bag or oxygen then one should take down to the low altitude, it is only the way of life saving. The HAPE can also lead to unconsciousness and death in short period of time.
Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)::
- Make sufficient time for acclimatization (After 3000 meters).
- Don't ascent up rapidly.
- Don't' use alcohol, sleeping pills and smoking.
- Drink more fluid 3-4 liters a day, clean boiled water / tea / coffee / soup / juice etc.
- Climb high and sleep low.
- Don't go trekking alone, take guide/porter.
- Follow the advice from your guide.
- Descent if mild symptoms are rapidly getting worse.
- Never leave to descent sick person alone.
- Avoid getting cold.
Please contact us if you need any further information about the sickness:
